Malibu Inn review - new owners-southern comfort food & BBQ too!!

Hi there,

Saying a quick prayer as I tread lightly into this ever ongoing debate on whether or not there are good ribs to be found in LA - Please be gentle....

Give the under new management MALIBU INN a try Believe me, I never thought I would find decent ribs in LA, much less Malibu. I have been to all the places I keep reading about on this site and I must say that I had not found a place that kept me coming back again and again although many are good when I get that craving. I am a Texas transplant - so I do know a little bit about a good rib, though I have long since learned it is all about your preference...

Anyway, I stopped in after noticing that it had been overhauled when I drove by a couple of weeks before, and figured I would go check it out and hope they hadnt messed it up. I did enjoy this as a breakfast spot often.

Imagine my suprise when I found some wonderful ribs and fried pickles, too!! I thought it must have been a fluke! Consistency is key, after all. I have been back 3 times and I must say 3 out of the 4 times it was excellent - (To be fair, Vernon who you will see visiting table to table to make sure everything is great, was not cooking on the day the ribs were not fall off the bone tender - but they still tasted great!). In true chowhound fashion, a group of us ordered several dishes over our visits and sampled them all so that we could give a full report. And to reconfirm my opinions before setting myself up for slaughter here!!LOL!!!

Here is what we found...

Pork and beef ribs - Amazing falling off the bone- I ask them to go light on the sauce, I like more meat than sauce - personal preference

BBQ sauce - wonderful homemade - thick, not from a bottle...not too sweet with a little kick at the end

Great sides (cooked by Vernon's sister) of baked beans from scratch (amazing), true homemade mashed potatoes w/skins (excellent), and other standbys. I was not that fond of the mac n cheese , but others liked it. And - finally a wonderful buttery not-sweet cornbread muffin!!! (with butter - yum!) -fresh from the oven.

I will say, I did not like their tritip or tritip sandwich at all, but this is about the rib for me. That is my BBQ preference.

They have a bunch of other stuff there - and I have not tried it all, but the 3/4 lb burger and the fish and chips platters look pretty good, but I can't get past the ribs!!! Vernon even gave us a sample of his smothered chicken and true southern succotash special and man, it was good, too! There are many more southern food dishes I look forward to is almost like being home again!! Heck they even had long cooking stone ground cheese grits on the breakfast menu. And who can go wrong with an eggs and ribs breakfast option?? So much to try!!

Portions are huge so sharing is good!

Anyway, I figured if anyone wanted to venture out to give their ribs a try, I would at least mention to any homesick southerners or those that appreciate this cuisine, that this was now out there to try. Head up the coast on the weekend say hi to Vernon and give the ribs a try. I know they made me happy and I will be back! Happy eating!!
