MAJOR changes at Sabrina's Cafe

We really enjoy breakfast at Sabrina's. Last year they started dinners and, at first, I wasn't thrilled. Then the food improved and, while I thought some entrees pricey for a neighborhood BYOB, they gave you a nice salad with your entree so I was happy. The food last month was creative.

They are one of the few restaurants open on Mondays (THey close Tuesdays) so we brought a friend in on Monday from the 'burbs for dinner. We called and left a reservation message but never heard back. We arrived for dinner and they were closed (cleaning up from their new 4pm closing time on Monday). They lost the business.

Well this morning we decided to try tonight. So I called. The message on their machine was confusing but I figured out a way to leave a message. No call back so I called again in afternoon. The woman said "we don't take reservations". And we now serve breakfast and lunch all day. So I said we'd be two at 6:30 and she said "It shouldn't be a problem". Well we got there and it wasn't, at least for us. One other couple there but a table set up for a party of 7 at 7pm. The room holds 24 people. By 7:15 all tables were full but a deuce.

Now the menu. The message is right. You can get breakfast (pancakes or eggs) or lunch (burgers, salads, sandwiches) until they close at 8 Wednesdays and 9 on weekends! There are 7 Dinner specials for after 5pm. Meatloaf with portobello mushroom sauce, garlic mashed and brocolli is one. We had that. ($9.95 plus $4.95 for the small side green salads we requested. (none on menu). They had Roasted Salmon ($16.95) and chicken breast stuffed with hot sausage ($13.95) I think.

Well this change was recent. Nearly everyone who came in was dissapointed at the menu and not interesting entrees. The waiter said they were trying "{comfort food") (Jones opens and this happens - a coincidence?). And the no reservations policy is really gonna hurt them. Finally, don't believe the hours on the phone message they have. They never bothered to change it.

It was such a cool place. Now it's only cool for breakfast or lunch or if you happen to catch them open. I posted a great dinner review a month or so ago. I temper that now. And... believe it or not... this is the same owner and same chef. Maybe they'll get the point and go back to the creative meals we've had for months.
