Maggie Mudd Non-Dairy Gelato

This ice cream, gelato and non-dairy frozen dessert outlet on Cortland simply needs to be mentioned weekly. For those with difficulty digesting milk and those who've chosen to forsake animal products, this place is a miracle: I've tried the wretched, vile, noisome products with names like Tofutti and Soy Dream and the multitudinously flavored Maggie Mudd soy desserts are to them as Chateau Rayas is to Charles Shaw.

Maggie Mudd buys its milk-based gelatos from Classico Gelato, its ice creams from a company in Oregon, and only the soy concoctions are made in the shop on Cortland Avenue. The results are a strawberry that tastes as fine as a Swanton berry, a double chocolate chip that compares with a nibble of Scharffen Berger, a tahini flavor that out-Baskins Robbins. Plus the employees are an engaging crew.

Note that a vegetarian restaurant named, I think, Geranium will be opening just up the street from MM in the middle of May. Geranium will serve both vegetarian and vegan items.
