We're on a road trip that included a stopover in Christiansburg, VA to see friends. Unfortunately, a few hours before we got here, our friends' whole family came down with a stomach bug, so we were on our own for dinner.
I searched Chowhound but didn't see anything for Christiansburg. We were considering going to Down South Pit BBQ (a place our friends said is also good), but it's closing time tonight was close to when we hoped to arrive. Instead, our friends suggested Mac and Bob's in Salem for a fun time and good food.
Varied menu and HUGE craft tap beer list. Many wide screen TVs showing multiple sports and other shows, no sound. Friendly, slightly amateurish but charming service.
We enjoyed a couple fairly local brews, then shared the salad with pepper ahi tuna and avocado with a wasabi vinagrette (delicious!) and the shrimp, andouille and grits--which came with a salad.
Normally, we probably would have skipped dessert, but we had checked out the menu online before we got there, and the Mud Pie looked really tempting. Had a little trouble deciding between that and the Quadruple Chocolate. The portion was enormous, so it's a good thing we'd planned to share. We also had coffee with dessert, and they made us a fresh pot.
Check including two beers, after tax but before tip was $58. One could easily spend less.
A group of college kids (the restaurant is directly across the street from Roanoke College) ordered calzones that each looked big enough to feed a family of four. Seriously. And there were many nice sandwich options and a variety of dinner-sized salads.
There was plenty of available street parking. There's also a parking lot adjacent to the restaurant that we didn't use because there was a large sign with prices posted. What we didn't see until we walked by was the small lettered note that parking is free while in the restaurant.
