Lupa or L'Impero

Former boyfriend (no romance left, but lots of good will) in town from London on biz. We can expense one meal within reason. He's young and hip, likes nice food (when we ate at Raymond Blanc's restaurant he imporessively ordered the pigs trotters) but isn't crazy about stuffy (no ties please). He is certain he wants Italian. But not red sauce.

If we had more time I'd drag him out to al di la because it is my fave, but we have to eat late, and he's staying in town, and blah blah blah.

I'm torn. Lupa sounds great and I was able to get a rez but part of me feels that I can afford Lupa on my own for a special occassion, that I should shoot a little higher, if the food is better. Is L'Impero tastier than Lupa, or just pricier and more formal? And, how formal is formal?

I'm open to other suggestions but let me preface by saying I want to try something new and have been to: Il Mulino, Felidia, Le Zie and Po and can't get a table at Babbo.
