I just had a very exciting walk down fifth avenue between around 40th and 60th in Sunset Park. Lots and lots of Mexican restaurants, panaderias and delis. It was kind of excruciating to make a lunch decision but I settled upon Ricos Tacos on 505 51st Street (right off of fifth avenue). The small place was absolutely packed. Very small menu that focus on taquitos, tostadas, tacos, huraches and tortas.
I ordered a hurache grande con carne and my friend ordered a few tacos: lengua, enchilada and al pastor. Upon looking around after my order I had complete remorse. We ordered wrong, the weekend special of pozole was obviously THE THING to order. It appeared that they make their own flour tortillas, though not the corn tortillas. The hurache and the tacos were nonetheless very good, honest food. Just not great. If you go, it helps to know a little bit of spanish, and a very good sign: no gringo menu.
Afterwards as we walked farther down fifth ave, we happened upon La Flor Bakery at 41st and fifth. Lots of great looking pasteries. I got a donut covered in sugar (regular sugar, not powdered!) that was sliced in half and had cream filling inside. 40 cents and VERY, VERY good. In the back of the bakery they have a small dining counter where they make tortas, tacos and various breakfast items. They have THE torta that I'm after, the illustrious torta cubana ($3.75). I'll be back.
