Loreley - German restaurant/beer hall in the LES

we love the Loreley (the newish German restaurant on Rivington between Chrystie and Bowery.) been hitting it about once a week and wanted to report it's been consistently such a nice place to hang out, drink beer and eat great food on warm nights after work. the back "garden" area is basically lots of wooden tables packed in the courtyard. no plants, but some nice lights and big umbrellas so it even works in light rain. always has a fun and mellow vibe, good mixed crowd (last night -locals, Euro tourists, old folks, hip kids, prada bag women) friendly service, and the food here is really great. I like everything I've had (and I've tried just about the whole menu) last night's wiener schnitzel was out of this world - tender, thin and super crispy, but moist. it comes with a nice salad, and great fries. but I always substitute for their spaetzle, which is also excellent - homemade and little fried in butter before it served so get some little brown crisp bits, and a lovely subdued flavor that comes out (almost like gnocchi) almost creamy, but has a nice toothsome bite. the spaetzle with bacon and cheese is out-of-this world. homemade hot pretzels cooked to order are great, and good when you don't want a meal (they have other good bar food like curry sausage and fries.) they've started opening at 1:00 pm on Sat and Sun, and frequently have events (some can get crazy packed and fun.) you can check their website for upcoming stuff http://www.loreleynyc.com/
