Why? Because the topic keeps repeating. AND because I tried another popular joint last night.
Here are my thoughts:
If you have the means: Go to Koi on PCH in Seal Beach - it's just over the Long Beach Border, and if you like good, fresh nigiri - this is the best in the vacinity.
If you're like me (love the fish, don't have the means) - Sushi Studio is my favorite spot. It throws a lot of people off being attached to a run-down motel, but it's the best bang for your buck. their Happy hour specials are a fantastic deal - although they've changed over time, but it's generally a Mon-Thur 3pm-6pm. Their rolls are creative and fun and tasty. Some people complain about the heavy sauces (just ask for less!)
Now, there are 2 Aki Sushis... The first, Aki Sushi and Thai is on 7th a couple blocks west of Cherry. That's the original. I like it - but, it's slightly more expensive. I haven't been in a while, but I remember enjoying the NY NY roll. Also of note: They deliver!
- The 2nd Aki is an offspring of the first, but it doesn't have the Thai food component. They are on Redondo, just south of 7th st. I ate there once and was not impressed.
My work day keeps me in close proximity to Niko Niko Sushi (at the corner of Bellflower/PCH) in the Ralphs strip mall. I've been a few times, but the only thing I really enjoyed is their lobster roll, and that's not enough to keep me coming back. Ive ordered more often from the Sushi Roll place on the corner of Palo Verde and Atherton - and I don't know if they have a real name.
Downtown Long Beach: My downtown Sushi is limited, but Wasabi has good happy hours deals - but it's not the best Sushi. If your looking for good FISH, go accross the street to Kings Fish House (Yes, I think they are a franchise) Kings is my favorite seafood in this city and they have a sushi menu as well. Also in that area: Paker's lighthouse and Gladstones - both are fish houses and both also have Sushi menus. Gladstones has a late night menu, I don't know about the other places.
Last on my list - Sushi Saurus on 2nd st in Belmont Shore.... went last night (1st mistake, going to sushi on a sunday) after reading reviews and hearing about it since I moved here a couple of years ago, WHY!? It's so over-rated, but it was cheap. They may have the best Tamago in town, but what's the point if your fish is nothing special.
