Every time I go to this place, I'm amazed there aren't lines out the door and down the street. It's a bakery by day, but at night their Cafe' offers fine dining at modest prices. Add excellent service, nice atmosphere, and BYOB, and you can't lose. Go on a Wednesday night (when you'll want a reservation) to get an amazing 3-course meal for $23.
Last night's highlights included a plump confit duck leg over a lentil salad; creamy polenta topped with a rich bolognese; a tasty sirloin steak finished with parsley butter; and a classic chile relleno (meat filling, not cheese) in a complex mole. A great vanilla panna cotta and an OK flourless chocolate cake then did us in. All that, I tell you, for $49 before tip.
It's in downtown Spencer and worth a drive.
