I was surprised when dropping into the Noho Les Gamin on Friday night to see that they've totally revamped their menu and jacked their prices. The $7 croque monsiuer is now $10-11. My favorite, a chicken rattatoulie sandwich is gone. Other inexpensive options have been dropped. That $7-8 salads are gone, replaced by $12-plus salads. Entrees of $18-$20 have been introduced (chicken paillard, e.g.) Oddly, for a Fench cafe menu, they didn't have roast chicken, or roasted anything else. I figure they must not have a serious oven. (The older Les Gamins never had much more than a stove and toaster ovens.)
Wow, the string of Les Gamins have long been great, reliable cafes for an inexpensive meals. Been going for 10 years or more. But for $18 entrees I can go to Salt, Jean Claude or Lozoo.
Are the other branche of Les Gamin going through the same transformation. Maybe the Noho one (new location) had to change to handle the rent. And BTW, the little cafe that has opened up in the old Les Gamin space on MacDougal near Prince St. served me a terrible meal recently. Bad service, too...
