After seeing a movie at the downtown cinema in San Mateo yesterday, we decided to go for a glass of wine at the new Left Bank in San Mateo right off the Hillsdale Exit on Hwy 101. We were there at 5:15 and there were already a good number of people in both the bar and the restaurant.
We had a cheese plate with glasses of Beaujolais and Cotes du Rhone. Service was pleasant and the wine and cheese enjoyable. We realized that we are unaware of any restaurant of this type in San Mateo that is open continuously throughout the day, and where you can get a light meal and alcohol. We used to do this at Viognier (at Draeger's on Fourth Avenue) but grew tired of the lackadasical service, and miniscule amounts of wine in huge glasses with big price tags.
As some postings here have mentioned, dinner has been less than stellar. We plan to wait a bit before having dinner at Left Bank to let them iron out the kinks. But it's a beautiful room and a welcome addition to San Mateo, which has no bistro type restaurant at all.
