Lee Kam Kee...wtf?

NinoHB | Jul 13, 2005 10:09 PM

I had Lee Kam Kee for lunch today for the first time and I can't figure out why people are impressed with it. I had their cha gio (egg rolls, imperial rolls or spring rolls or whatever else you want to call it). I don't know who on this site recommended it but, they weren't all that great. They were small like the fast food type, the filling wasn't very good with very little carrot and bean thread in it (don't even remember if I did see any carrot), and the banh chanh wrapper they used was too thick and gummy when you bit into it. Besides lettuce and tia to leaf, it came with opal basil which is weird in itself since you don't eat those two together. And there was no mint. I also had the com tam bi cha trung suon nuong (broken rice with shredded pork skin, egg cake and grilled pork chop). It was okay to say it at best. The fish cake was salty, pork chop didn't seem like it was grilled, and the shredded pork skin was just average.

For a place that calls itself a Vietnamese restaurant, I didn't hear a word of Vietnamese spoken in there either except when I asked to order and if they someone spoke it. Do Vietnamese people even frequent it on a regular basis? To me it didn't feel like a Vietnamese restaurant. But it's Chinese-Vietnamese...
