on this trip to vegas ate at a few old favs and tried 2 new spots.
breakfast/ brunch eats -
back to the usual ( i need to branch out on my next trip ) - i went to hash house a gogo and black bear diner. has house agogo was a brunch visit today. i went back to the benedicts list and tried the hammer pork loin, with what i believe was a tomato/maple syrup cream sauce, the biscuit, mashed potato and scrambled eggs with slices of tomato. again, an interesting combination that works. not sure how large the pork loin disc is before it's pounded but it was about an 8" frisbee looking like a weinershitzel ( sp ? ) on steroids !!
SO had the chicken pot pie ....another interesting pile of food that works ...it reminded me of the tostado salad - a large hat dish made of a rosemary flatbread - large chunks of chicken, veggies, and potato chunks - tasted very good but i felt it was missing something...just not sure what !
a friend joined us and he had one of the scrambles - i warned him it was a boring dish and compared to mine and the SO ...it was ! the marmalade was orange - banana...nowhere near as good as the strawberry from my last visit.
the black bear diner is much more traditional than the hash house a gogo - just up the street from my condo - it serves hearty, truck stop style breakfasts...i highly recommend this as a place to go - simple yet damn good food !
tried to get into lotus of siam last nite but they were booked and can only tell us that it was a minimum 45 minute wait....bummer...my friend has visited thailand several times so i wanted his take on the place - we settled for the korean bbq in the same shopping center ...next to the massive mexican restaurant/ banquet hall southwest portion of the strip mall if you are facing out from LOS. i did not see the sign for the korean bbq and did not notice it when we looked at the menu. i do not have alot of experience with korean bbq, but this place was similar to the places i've been to - we ordered the marinated beef ( is it kalbi ?? ) and the pork loan, a spicy tofu soup, beef and leek soup, and some shrimp fried rice. i beleive the pork loin and beef were about $20 - they include the array of appetizer bowls like kimchi and a salad plate. the waiter cooked the meat for us...basically spoke no english so our questions ceased after 2 or 3 attempts ...oh well. the beef was excellent...i doubt more than 6 ounces of meat. the pork loin did not have much flavor. i rice was average, the appetizer bowls were very good and the spicy tofu soup was perfect for a cold vegas winter evening. overall, a decent place
finally, today, i finally tried glacier ice cream. i've seen several posts about this place and being anex-owner of a few cold stone's, i figured i had to give this place a try.
i am very surprised as to it's location - it's basically at the end...the west end of tropicana in a smith's shoppin center. i tasted a sample of the peanut butter....waaaaay too much peanut butter....very little ice cream taste. i chose a cup of triple nut rocky road and the caramel oreo....i did not find the ice cream to be any better or worse than cold stone, it was basically soft serve ice cream and my spin...it's like cold stone except they decide the mix-in's....don't get me wrong it's decent ice cream but heck, the standard customer...a 12 year old is not going to really notice the quailty difference but when they see that the ice cream is already mixed, i see them looking for the closest cold stone
next on the list - japonais, pamplemousse and the hash house ( not hash house a go go )
