Just ate at La Scarola per the many recommendations on this board. Really enjoyed it. Reservations honored about 20 minutes late, acceptable. Escarole with garlic had burnt garlic, but I like the bitter taste so did not send back. Pasta Fagiole was amazing, deep garlic, wine and herb flavors with intact, not mealy beans and al dente pasta. The broth itself was not a gelatanous mess like so many other versions of this dish.
The grilled calamari was quite good, not spectacular but above average. A little overcooked, thats all. The portion was HUGE so I felt good about this dish.
I had the eggplant parmagiana as I was looking for a staple red sauce italian-american dish. This fit the bill! The eggplant not bitter at all, and was very light, not oil soaked like so many other versions. There was still a definate eggplant flavor where so many others have not. The red sauce was light with a healthy dose of garlic. Parmesan a few steps above others...HUGE portion. Served with al dented pasta.
My GF got jumbo shrimp wrapped in procuitto over risotto. The shrimp truly were jumbo, a little overcooked. The risotto was creamy, but with still a nice firm bite to the grains. Nice oven-dried tomatoes in the rice.
yes, italian-american of the highest order, loved it. tons of left-overs.
