La Mela - YUCK !

OK everyone...just wanted to warn you. Never, ever eat at La Mela on Mulberry St. Even if someone had a gun to my head I wouldn't do it again. This is some of the worst slop I have ever encountered. I was forced to eat there on Saturday by a friend who had eaten there before and claimed it was delicious. I try to steer clear of all restaurants on Mulberry because I think they are all tourist traps and the food is garbage. La Mela just proved my theory correct. They claim it's family style, but they only have 6 items on the menu, two of them being dessert items. Without even asking, the waiter brought us the cold antipasto (mozz & tomatoes). Very blah presentation and the taste wasn't much better, although I will say this was the best course of the whole meal. Next came "Hot Antipasto" which we didn't ask for either, canned asparagus (YUCK !) which was grilled and some parmesan thrown on top of it, stuffed mushrooms with a stuffing so butter laden I almost threw up when I tasted it, an unidentifiable cheesy thing(could have been garlic bread) and roasted red peppers. The piece de la resistance was the "3 pasta" main course, rigatoni w/ marinara, tortellini w/ an alfredo sauce with a few peas and mushrooms thrown in and unedible gnocchi with riccota on top. To make this whole thing worse, they served all 3 pastas on once dish so all the sauces ran together. Disgusting is a compliment for this dump. What made the entire meal even worse was the fact that the waiters and other employees were leering at us the whole time asking if we were single and saying sexist things in italian. At least my friend paid for the meal, if I ever had to shell out money for this travesty I would have lost it ! Is there any place on Mulberry that is decent ? If so, I haven't found it yet. Remember fellow chowhounds....La Mela....STAY AWAY !
