LA couple's first visit to NYC, fine dining suggestions.

I'll be in NYC May 5 - May 10. I've been briefly looking at restaurants online and its a bit overwhelming.

Let me start by saying I'm staying in the Times Square area (about two blocks away) I dont mind traveling for something exceptional if needed. I'm looking for something with great ambiance and obviously good food. I'd like some fine dining suggestions as well as anything else you may think would suit me. Dress code etc wont bother me, I almost would prefer a few suggestions where a jacket is required. Also, price isnt really a huge factor but I'd like to keep it around $50 plate, if some place is worth an extra cost i dont mind. I just want to make this trip as exceptional as possible.

We dont really have a preference on the type of food, Italian, French, American, Steakhouse etc are all fine.

In my brief internet searches on Village Vines I've looked at Le Cirque, Kittichai and Delmonico's those look pretty nice but since there is so many different places in NYC I figure I'd ask for a little help.

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

** Edit: When I say $50 a plate I meant pre tax, not including appetizers, drinks etc. I would like to spend roughly $100 - $140 per person, not including tip. After a little more research and a couple comments I realize I've clearly underestimated the difference in NYC and LA prices.
