This small 9-table family-run restaurant is a hidden dining treasure in Connaught Garden, Cheras. The menu seemed heavily slanted towards Hakka-style cooking (客家菜). This very interesting spot was actually a recommendation by a foodie friend who lives in Cheras, which I’m given to understand is one of KL’s oldest suburbs – I don’t know how old, but I do know that it must be massive, because the traffic jams on the highway going towards there looked like a scene out of Armageddon!
What we had this evening:
- Fish-head curry – which was the ultimate! Best-tasting fish-head curry I’d had in KL ever! The only place where I’d tasted better fish-head curry was Ocean Curry Fish Head back in Telok Ayer Street in Singapore. Just like its Singaporean counterpart, Eight Treasure’s fish head curry was Chinese-style: with tofu puffs, cabbage, long beans & aubergine wedges thrown in. It was sour-ish (tamarind or pineapple used?), rich (coconut milk) and has a tasty blend of spices which can only be described as “Chinese-Malaysian” (no Indian curry-style fenugreek or cardamom scent)
- Braised pork with preserved mustard vegetables (“mui choy”) – which the Cantonese call “kau yoke” (扣肉) , but which the Hakka pronounce “kiu nyuk”. I thought the version here was the tastiest I'd had in along time.
- Thai green chilis stuffed with a mixture of fish and pork mince – highly recommended by my friend, and which I thought was very tasty indeed – don’t miss this here.
I need to come back to try the other dishes: the chicken cooked with wine at the other table looked interesting.
