This retro-looking spot on Jalan Tok Hakim in downtown Kota Bharu purportedly serves the best Hainanese chicken rice in town - something which I was quite keen to try out and compare to the versions I had in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Ipoh and Malacca.
My take on Sung Kee's chicken rice? It was good - moist, fragrant rice with well-separated grains. The poached chicken was delicious, and the accompanying chicken consomme soup was light and tasted absolutely perfect.
I also ordered an interesting side-dish of braised yam with dried shrimps, which was very tasty indeed and went well with the chicken rice.
Overall, I'd rate Sung Kee's chicken rice above the versions I'd tried in Penang, Malacca and Kuala Lumpur (with the exception of Loke Yun, the legendary spot in Ampang http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/865070). Hainanese rice in Singapore and Ipoh are still better.
Will I come back again for this - probably not if I'm in Kota Bharu for a short visit, as the Kelantanese-Malay food far surpasses the appeal of any Kelantan-Chinese food here. But Sung Kee does provide an interesting option if one hankers for local Chinese food. The best-known and one of the oldest Chinese restaurants in town is Choo Choon Huay, just round the corner from Sung Kee, along Jalan Post Office Lama. I didn't have a chance to try that during this trip.
