Had another lunch at Khao Sarn (Coolidge Corner, Brookline)the other day, so I thought I'd post an update...
I think they have the "fear of heat" problem licked....I didn't use my chow-passport, because I was with a friend who has a pathological fear of spicy food,(yes,I have friends among all kinds) but I asked for MY dishes hot, and they delivered!
We had the Shrimp Papaya salad, a searingly fresh blend of the four Thai flavors; sour papaya, sweet tinge in the dressing, hot chili peppers, salty tang of fish sauce....So clean! And came with shrimp chips to scoop it up with...Marked one pepper, I asked for spicy, and my friend was gulping water and coughing..But as I said... :)
I had been wanting to try the Yen Ta Fo Soup...No peppers, but I asked for it HOT!!!! Wheee!! A big bowl of broth that had the flavors of Tom Yum, but added depth because of the red bean paste that flavored and colored it. Flat, papardelle-like rice noodles, fish-balls, fish cake, tofu and some calamari and shrimp...And a noticeable amount of Thai spinach...A belly-filling bowl, and my new favorite cold and rainy-day soup....My nose ran, my eyes teared; I was in heaven!
My friend had the Pad Woonsen; glass noodles with shrimp, pea pods(lots!), egg, and a bunch of veggies...Of course I tried it; flavorful, yet still clean, enough real "stuff" in the noodles, we almost didn't need the salad....Ah, the things I do for chowhound!
Once again, I was impressed with the fresh, intense flavors of this place! I've never liked Thai food this much.
