Khana Peena in Berkeley

Just had lunch today at a relatively new Indian restaurant on Solano in Berkeley called Khana Peena. It's just about across the street from Ajanta (at the top end of Solano).

Very nice space as far as decor - linens on the tables, nice tapestries on the walls and ceiling, lots of windows and clean and light.

The food was pretty good. Altho on the spiciness level it was about the same as Cafe Raj - but I heard the waiters tell another table they could order their food hot - so maybe that's the way to go. We just ordered as is for today since it was our first visit.

They do a lunch buffet of about 6-8 dishes for $7.99.

We ordered off the menu and had chicken tikka masala, ma dal, vegetable birayni, plain naan and an onion kulcha. The birayni was a little mushy - definately wouldn't try that again. The chicken was good as was the dal and I had a great mango juice - very thick and sweet and delicious. We spent about $25 for the two of us.

Service was good - they had lots of staff and weren't too busy. Wouldn't be surprised if at some point they stop serving lunch cause they weren't getting the crowds, but I'd recommend it if you aren't a stickler for absolutely authentic foods - and we'll try it again.
