Had a light dinner at Kevin Taylor's in Hotel Teatro this past weekend. We had wonderful service from Therese, ask for her, we were impressed.
We started with the goat cheese salad. It was a mix of butter lettuce and spring mix with a very light Meyer lemon vinaigrette, some preserved (sun-dried?) tomatoes, and a large wedge of aged chevre with ash rind. A very simple salad and all the elements were kept separate on the plate, which made it cleaner and more pure, but still tasted great whether you got a bit of each flavor in one bite or tasted the flavors in sequence. I had a Davis Bynum chardonnay, which was a very good version of a classic California style and my wife had a Drylands Marlborough New Zealand Sauv. Blanc that was amazing with a HUGE bell pepper nose and taste, WOW! And it was a tremendous pairing with the salad. We were in a good mood and ready to be pleased, but the service, quality of the food and the wine pairings really made us happy.
We even got an amuse of crab cake, which was a nice gesture and delicious.
Next we each had an appetizer, my wife the lobster bisque with lemongrass and I had a lobster salad with grapefruit and avocado with watercress or some other spicy greens. Unfortunately these dishes, while good, were not as wonderful as our salad. Lemongrass overpowered the lobster flavor in the bisque and the my lobster tail just didn't have very much flavor, almost like it was a fresh water version. Nothing bad enough to leave us displeased, though.
Bread and butter was very good as well. As I said it was a quick meal, so we had no entrees or dessert, but I hope we will be able to return. I really enjoyed the wines we had and the rest of the list looked good as well.
