Had a lovely and very priceworthy meal at Kathmandu on Saturday night. Located on Venice Blvd., just west of Bamboo, and now next door to a new Mexican place (Fidel's), Kathmandu features Nepalese cuisine, and is a worthy successor to Chandni, a vegetarian place that decamped Culver City a couple of years ago. This place has a much friendlier vibe and better atmosphere. It also offers meat items along with an extensive vegetarian menu. No beer or wine but a liquor store is only a half block away.
We started with steamed momos which looked like shu-mai and were lightly stuffed with vegetables. Tasty sauce accompaniment. Also had a spicy corn dish which was a nice starter(they call their appetizers "snacks" for some reason).
We had several vegetarian dishes -- my favorite was the cauliflower and potato (alu ghobi?), but all were excellent. Also had mustard greens which were very fresh tasting and lovingly sauteed, eggplant paneer, and chicken masala, all excellent. The food tasted somewhat different from other Indian style cuisine, a little stronger on the cardamon, perhaps? Hard to say. Much less spicy than most Indian food, which was good for our taste.
Service was extremely friendly and efficient. The bill, including tax and a generous tip, for four people, came to $40. Great deal.
