Kathmandu Strikes Out

Kathmandu Restaurant in Berkeley is ruining its service. The last two times we went the staff had been replaced by a little boy and an angry man who throws the food on your table and gives you dirty looks. Worst yet, we went with our friends who had never eaten there. We thought the bad service a few weeks earlier was just a one time event. We were embarassed when we receieved the worst service we ever had plus were not given the dishes and condiments we had ordered. We kept asking the server and he said he was too busy. He grabbed something off the next table to us and threw it on our table! It was dirty and we had seen the previous diners eating from it just a few minutes before they had left! This is a health code violation, incidentally. When we asked for water, the little boy said the glasses were still being washed and there weren't enough to go around. We couldn't believe this was happening at Kathmandu Restaurant. For years we have gone there and we have never experienced service like this. By the time we left, the restaurant was only half full. We noticed that the server had calmed down and was now serving the new parties their condiments and appropriate dishes. At more than $80 for our table, Kathmandu Restaurant in Berkeley is hardly a charity case. The management needs to seriously rethink its choice to cut back on service. Unlike other restaurants in the area that when out of business because of the economy, Kathmandu Restaurant has always done well. If management thinks it can cut service because it can and reap more profits, it might as well examine its values for having Kathmandu Restaurant open in the first place. We did not leave a tip. 1410 Solano Avenue at Santa Fe in Berkeley 510-526-3222. The food is excellent and the prices are high, but if the restaurant is full, you'll have to endure it being thrown on your table by an angry server and a little boy who says you can't have water because there aren't enough clean glasses to go around.
