Went to KC last week with Chow reviews from Dave Feldman and Simon Majumdar in hand. (Pretty amusing since I grew up in KC and they are Out Of Towners). Based on Dave's reviews we drove straight from the airport to Fiorella's Jack Stack BBQ. I had tried their take out before and was not impressed. The food is MUCH better in the restaurant. And service was amazingly good. Our waiter, Josh, was the epitome of midwestern hospitality. When we told him we couldn't decide what to order he brought us a sample of their main dishes! We were very happy with the pork spare ribs, lamb ribs, and pork and beef burnt ends. The sides were just ok--tried the onion rings, french fries, cole slaw, beans. My 14 yr old did love the cheesy corn. And I always enjoy the Boulevard beer--had a pale ale and then a wheat based on waiter's recommendation--wheat is my new favorite. Prices were not bad--$56 for 3 of us included 2 beers, 1 wine, 3 main dishes and lots of sides. Ate at Gates following evening. We were told ribs would be a 20 minute wait. I told them it wasn't a problem since I came from California to eat their ribs. For some reason they took us out of line, seated us at a table and sent a waitress over to take care of us. (I've never had that happen at Gate's--I've always waited in the cafeteria line.) The ribs were worth the wait--even better than Jack Stack. Sides were as good as Jack Stack. Prices very reasonable: $77 for 7 of us (and the waitress gave me a bottle of sauce to take home). Third night we tried to go to LC's but it's closed on Sundays. (Anyone know if the Lenexa location is as good as the Blue Parkway?) So we drove to Hayward's but realized we had eaten there several years ago and it was mediocre so back to Jack Stack. Didn't have time to go to Stroud's while in KC so ate lunch there a few days later in Wichita. Big mistake--they don't offer my favorites-- wings or cottage fries--on the lunch menu. Sweet talked the cook into frying wings for me; their french fries were almost as good as their cottage fries. (Their lease is up in a few months and there was some uncertainty about their future. Also have been hearing rumors about the Troost KC location being in jeopardy because of the street widening. Anyone know if that's true?) While in Wichita learned of a pending Bay Area Chowhound BBQ taste off day after we returned home--was able to buy BBQ sauce in the KC airport! They have all varieties of Arthur Bryant's, Gates, Jack Stack and a few others. Also sell Valomilks and Cherry Mash. Had a wonderful trip but I would weigh 500 pounds if I still lived in KC!
