Even though Kai Sushi is in the same strip mall as my new office, and I've heard good things, its taken me a month to eat there. This is mainly because I wanted to wait until I had time to enjoy a long lunch there..and because my coworkers have raved about the place but also commented that it was a little pricey for lunch.
They are right about that (there is no AYCE, and prices are consistent with quality, so it would be hard to get out of there for less than 20 bucks if you're having sushi)....but it was definitely worth it. The fish is very fresh and high-quality, and the chefs know what they are doing. It seems to be a family-owned place, and the two chefs working there today may have been father and son. Anyway, they definitely were well-trained sushi chefs....it was a pleasure to watch them and sample their food. They carried on nice conversations with the (unfortunately few) folks at the sushi bar, and even made a few excellent recommendations. By the time I left I felt like family too.
The place was empty at lunch. I understand its only been open for a few months, and it must be hard competing in this economy. This restaurant is dedicated to quality; they deserve your business. In addition to sushi there are reasonably priced (7.95 range) lunch specials and a teppan-yaki table at dinner.
Kai Sushi is on Durango a half-block south of Flamingo. Its next door to the Salvation Army store....
