Located on the other side of the tracks from the touristed downtown area, Kady’s Country Kitchen is nestled up against the freeway with a big parking lot and a few tables outside. The atmosphere’s diner style with well-worn booths and a counter, plus the requisite display of collectibles, in this case a huge collection of kitschy salt and pepper shakers. Kady’s felt more like a locals’ place, or at least the friendly servers seemed to greet most of their customers by name.
I was here for the Swedish pancakes. Or maybe I should say pancake since an order of just one, $3.75, is possible. I’ve had Swedish pancakes at a couple places in the Bay Area, and Kady's beat them handily. No contest. The very thin layer of rich eggy batter was beautifully browned. Part of the pancake was rolled underneath to form multiple layers and the remaining half folded over. Served with butter and a sprinkle of powder sugar, plus lingonberry preserves, this was the perfect start to the day. I loved the crispy edges.
Because this looked like the kind of place that might have good B&G, I also got a side of biscuits and gravy, $3.95. The biscuit was indeed good, short and crumbly, and tasting of butter. But the gravy had lumps of flour and not much flavor beyond black pepper and milk.
On the way out, I looked at the individual size peach and apple pies made here. Now I’m sorry I didn’t buy one to-go.
The family that runs the place is lovely. And if you’re curious as I was, “Kady” is not a person but the combination of the owners’ initials, K and D.
