In Portsmouth, NH is an incongruously serious restaurant, given its silly name, called Jumpin' Jay's Fish Cafe. The clam chowder blew me away -- I man, there is a fine line between elegant and pretentiously fancy, to which this chowder tread perilously close; but it did not lose its footing. Unless you think "elegant clam chowder" is a contradiction not worth pursuing -- and indeed I myself might have said I thought so, prior to eating at JJ's -- you will be well served in trying this one. Other than the chowder, I had some sauteed fish -- very tasty if not as memorable as the chowder -- and Ellen had a salad which was quite tasty. Service was a little off but I think this can be attributed to the fact we came with Sylvia, not realizing -- as we looked at the name of the place -- what a fancy restaurant it was. Not a good place for the kids.
