OK - - - So I know there is ton of CH talk on who likes what cakes from which bakery in the NH County area. I am one of those who has been partial to Julia's cakes--especially marble cake with cannoli filling and buttercream frosting--yum. I've been going there since the Loehmann's Plaza days. Its been my go-to bakery for birthday and shower cakes and guests always rave about the taste of the cake. I don't like whipped cream frosting or Italian soaked cakes.
I'm addressing this to those who are fans of Julia's cakes. So Haters can ignore.
I ordered a birthday cake recently--the usual stated above--and it was such a disappointment. So much so that I gave them a call the next day to ask if they changed their recipe for their buttercream. Sure enough, she said they changed their buttercream recipe by replacing the margarine to real butter. "The owner thought it would give it a fresher taste." Now, who would ever think that changing from margarine to butter would be a bad thing? I LOVE BUTTER. I don't think I have ever had a stick of margarine in my frig in my life. But the frosting tasted so different--almost like nothing.
So, I'm asking those who enjoy Julia's buttercream to let me know if you've had a cake recently with buttercream and if you noticed a big difference negative or perhaps positive or what you thought. She said they changed the recipe a few months ago.
Also, this cake had a scanned print placed on the top--my son is a huge Yo Gabba Gabba fan, and even it was weird--had a paper-like texture that you could lift off with a fork. Julia's rep wondered if perhaps it doesn't "melt" as much on the butter-based frosting but said they hadn't had any complaints.
So, needless to say, I will probably be ordering a fudge-frosted birthday cake for the next birthday party.
