i happened to be in the area last night, and since i had nothing but an old new yorker mag for company, i decided to drop in to this well regarded joint for a quick meal.
for childhood reasons, i somehow regard jook as a home-only food, and almost never order it at a resto (except ozone thai). so that left me with fun. i knew it was perhaps a long shot, but i tried the house special pan fried noodles. mistake.
the veggies were overcooked beyond even my own early ham fisted bachelor efforts. the choy sum was actually mushy, like pudding encased in a fibrous membrane. the kitchen tries to make the dish 'special' by tossing a few mussels on top, but these were chewy, dessicated and, as the first and last one i ate slid down my throat, a bit off tasting... the only fun had that night in my gi tract was on the part of that mussel. finally, the whole thing was underseasoned, and i actually had to use the soy sauce bottle.
this bad experience is just one data point. i don't suggest that jook n fun is bad, but maybe just like google shares - no longer infallible.
