Italian Ice is a popular treat in Chicago but is not so common out here in SoCal. I saw the current AAA Auto Club Westways magazine page which highlighted 3 great place for summer treats in OC and Joe's was one of the three places featured. After a mishap with my daughter and a lengthy drive home ahead of us after dinner, we needed a treat!
I remembered it being on Harbor Blvd in GG so south we went on Harbor from Disneyland...I told my wife and son to look for a sign that says "Joe's"...and sure sunough, there it was a half-mile up....Joe's Crab Shack. ARGH! Luckily another few blocks up was a lit up white, red and green awining and I said that's got to be the place...and it was (just south of Chapman on the E side of Harbor).
Joe's is the best that Chicag...er, what's this Philadelphia stuff? Ok, so it's Philly based, and they call it "water ice". Nothing more than an oversized shack on a busy street with no indoor seating and very limited outdoor seating, I wan't sure if this was a good idea...um, it is! Italian ice in multiple flavors, some of the best soft-serve I have ever had, hard ice cream and sherbert as well including the "Joelatti" (soft serve and italian ice)...and pretty reasonably priced as well, especially in Disney country. We got 4 good-sized treats for $10.
Hey Philly, I'll take a Chicago Italian Beef over a Chessesteak any day, but I gotta say, Joe's makes the cut for dessert! Well worth the stop!
