As I learned over the weekend, Jerry's White Sicilian pie is wonderful.
The sicilian pie, which comes in either large or small is a rectangular pie covered with smashed anchovies, garlic, parsley, olive oil, and a little parmesan. The crust is medium-to-thick and, like great Italian bread, is the perfect marriage of crunch and soft yeastiness. It is truly outstanding.
Because of the intricate preparation, Jerry requires two hours notice for a White Sicilian, so be sure to call ahead.
Some will find the surly service and bare-bones diner decor to be off-putting, but I found it endearing. At first, Jerry is not the most personable old man in the world. Don't even bother asking for no anchovies on a portion of the pie. We tried, and he barked "No!" at the phone. But, when he saw us enjoying the pie, he eventually warmed up to us. He even promised that the extra slices we took home with us would be even better then next day! Can't wait to find out . . .
