Japonais experience

Went to Japonais on Saturday night, prior to seeing the Lion King. We had 5:30 reservations.

For appetizers, we had Kobe Beef Carpaccio and Dungeness Crab dumplings. Both were good- the Dungeness Crab dumplings were phenomenal, loaded with fresh crabmeat.

For dinner, my wife had the duck, which was excellent (comes with japanese pancakes, plum sauce, and a mango chutney). I had an appetizer of Pachinko, which was Panko breaded oysters topped with a sauce that seemed to include some chopped shrimp or scallop. I also had various pieces of sushi nigiri. The sushi was good, but I wish that I would have ordered a menu creation after tasting my wife's duck (By the way, the 1/2 order of duck is plenty for one person).

Dessert was a cake with mascarpone cheese, chocolate and white cake, topped with marinated pineapple and coconut ice cream. It was rich and plenty for two.

The service was great, but I understand that when the restaurant begins to hop later on, there are often problems with servers disappearing for long periods of time. Overall, I thought the food was great, and the portions were very reasonable. I would definitely go back and try some new things.

The Lion King show was very cool. After that, we went to Avec on Randolph street, which was somewhat boring, and then to Ghostbar on top of Nine Restaurant down the street. Good people watching there.
