Jakes Roadhouse visit & review

marv | Mar 21, 2005 12:32 AM

Went to Monrovia this past Friday for the family festival. It was rained out & decided to check out Jakes Roadhouse for barbeque. It wasn't very busy, was sat immediately and ordered. I had the rib, chicken, sausage plate and it was served tepid. The sauce was as cold as the meats. The ribs had no smoke ring & were tough on the bone. The Texas sausage was not a hot link as advertised, had no bite at all and was more like a thick hot dog. The chicken was undercooked, bloody at the bone joint. The cole slaw was decent but the beans tasted like they just came out of a can. The corn bread was like a hard hockey puck. Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed. They always say that if you can't smell the smoke in the parking lot or as you enter, leave. I should have ran fast to the Claim Jumper on Huntington Dr. My conclusion is that this is really a coffee shop not a roadhouse. There were no grits, buttermilk bisquits or country ham on the all day breakfast menu. Real rib palaces don't serve breakfasts allday. This was the absolute worst BBQ I've had in L.A. As I was leaving another guest also leaving suggested Frank and Joes Smokehouse next time. Evidently it's around the corner. Never heard of it but it can't be worse than Jakes Roadhouse. Besides Claim Jumper are there any other "decent" rib joints in the area?
