I was so eager for the opening of Jacques Torres'Manhattan store. But I have actually not bought anything there at all. The shop that's making me fear for my pocket is Kee's (west side of Thompson st., close to Spring st.)
I didn't know about Kee's until I saw the posts here. Since then I've tried her raspberry chocolate, the 'Thompson' (ganache and cream), the almond, and the tiramisu. All were light and full of flavor.
I think Kee's is better for the people who prefer not-too-sweet chocolate and intense filling flavor. To my taste, Torres' chocolates are a bit buttery and a bit too sweet.
Kee's also gets extracurricular points in my book for being an artisan working in such a small shop. I'm dying to try the creme brulee truffles there, but I haven't been courageous enough to try the more -to me- adventuresome flavors like jasmine, sesame, green tea, etc.
The only thing I'm curious about at Torres are his chocolate graham crackers because I always liked those. Otherwise, it's Kee's all the way (and La Maison du Chocolat but that's another story).
