My dinner the other night was all that I could hope from an Italian dining experience: friendly service and great food without gourmet prices. This is the sweet life, fellow chowhounds, this is Mi Dolce Vida.
Upon entering the ground-floor door to Mi Dolce Vida's upstairs dining room, you pass a life size cut out of a large, grinning Italian man holding a mammoth platter of seafood. The next thing you see is that same Italian man at the top of the stairs. When he saw us he clapped and smiled like an excited child. "Good to see you again" he says with thick hand outstreched in joyful greeting. Of course, it's my first time here, but I'm not going to tell him that, he's too happy to see me again.
After he took our coats he led us to a window seat overlooking Hanover St. We both order a cocktail and before it arrives we are seranaded by a guitar/violin duo who were almost as fun as the owner. almost. They were very good, but I ususally need a drink or two before I respond well to seranading. I need about five or six to respond well of a capella.
Anyhow, we were a bit short on cash, so we weren't able to have appitizers or soup, but fortunately we were treated to some bread and cured olives which slaked our hunger for all the food we could smell wafting about the place.
The menu was a good mix of standard favorites and some exciting specials. Tho, I could tell that the specials never really changed, they all looked good so I decided on the 'stuffed chicken'--mostly because I couldn't imagine they could have that many things stuffed into one breast without confusing the tongue. My date went with the 'scampi on pasta'--a decidely boring choice (and a boring date for that matter)
When the meal arrived my plate was brimming with vegatables and seafood. Somewhere, under all these crisp, seasoned vegatables was a chicken breast and I immediately began eating my way to it. All I can say is that I was amazed. I was cursing myself that I could not perform such culinary magic. My date's scampi was good, but need a bit more zzest in my opinon.
I wish I could tell you all about more of the food, but alas, my wallet was committed to after-dinner plans (what was I thinking?) and I could only have the entree. All in all, I had a great time at Mi Dolce Vida, even tho my date wasn't good, the food carried me thru. I'd recomend Mi Dolce Vida to anyone who happens to be in the North End. The Matre'd will be overjoyed to see you again.
Tord-I'll get to those other restaurants soon. Once I get my paycheck I'll eat & report.
