Irvine: Bin Bin Konjac

yet another sign that Irvine is the new "Chinatown".

Grand opening was 1.5 weeks ago. Actually I would think that the name should be Bing Bing Konjac (get it?) because shaved ice is pretty much all they serve. Had the Fresh Mango w/Konjac shaved ice. The shaved ice is really a very smooth slushy that lasts a long time. I brought it home and was eating my dessert four hours later.

The red bean one looks good too. From the menu:

"Originally from Sikkim, India, Konjac is rich in 'Glucomanan'-commonly known as the 'food fiber.' Glucomannan can increase gatrointestinal motility, diuretics, increase bowl (sic) movement, and decrease the chance of Colon cancer. Konjac is the low calorie food which makes you feel full and satisfy (sic). It is the best choice for a late night snack. Also a vegetarian item."

Since I don't speak Chinese, I'm still not sure what konjac is, but it tastes, looks and feels exactly like young coconut (macapuno).

This store is in the old dry cleaner's space next to S.W. Seafood off the Jeffrey exit from the 5 freeway. i haven't been to the other locations in San Gab, Rosemead, etc, so can't compare.
