inexpensive, quiet bar/lounge with snacks near Grand Central??

Relatives are coming to town for a family meeting and we need a place to eat and then talk. For reasons too complicated to go into, this can't be at anyone's home.

Here are some parameters:

1. one person isn't very ambulatory, so right near Grand Central would be great.

2. one person is a spendhrift who's living with prices from a previous (long ago) moment in time and is dismayed by the cost of things today. They will make a stink at $10 glasses of wine. I myself would have suggested a place like the Campbell Apartments or the Algonquin lobby but then we will spend the entire time listening to this one person complain to the waitstaff and then management about how expensive it all is. For what it's worth, this person will also refuse to take a taxi as they think that's a waste of good money, so another reason for staying around Grand Central.

The place does need to be quiet and cosy for the family talk. Any ideas? For instance, is there a hotel with an inexpensive restaurant/diner and then a decent lobby we can sit in to talk?

I don't know mid-town very well anyway so any helpful thoughts would be appreciated.
