There's a new pizzeria on Jericho just west of 110 (146 West Jericho Tpke, 631 935 0200) that is a must-visit for pizza aficionados: Massa's Coal-Fired Brick Oven Pizzeria. Owner is a nephew of Patsy Grimaldi and he makes pizza in that tradition: thinnish crust, sparsely topped with high-quality mozzarella, crushed tomatoes and pecorino.
We can all debate whether Grimaldi's in Brooklyn has gone downhill, who currently has the best pizza in the 5 boroughs, how the great LI places (Emilio's, Umberto's) compare, etc., etc. But there's no question that coal-fired brick-oven pizza is virtually nonexistent on the Island (I only know of The Pie in Port Jeff and Salvatore's in Port Wash) and Massa's is a worthy addition to this tiny club.
The place itself is nothing beautiful, and there are still kinks to be worked out, but I am anxious to support this place for the glory of Long Island.
