On I-Drive by Wet 'n Wild is a new walk up place called Hula Dog. Not sure if you watch No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain or if you've been to Kauai in Hawaii, but there is a hot dog place there that invented a type of Hawaiian hot dog. Bourdain visited the place (Puka Dog) on his Hawaii show trip. Hula Dog brings those here to Orlando. We ate there today for lunch.
It is a unique concept to say the least - you get your choice of three dog types (original, spicy or veggie), then you add a savory sauce (Garlic-Lemon, Jalapeno or Hot Chili Pepper), then add a fruit-based sauce of either mango, pineapple, or banana. Then you add a mustard flavor of mango, pineapple, spicy brown or yellow, and then if you wish you can add regular hot dog condiments of ketchup, relish or onions. All of these are served in a hollowed out Hawaiian sweet roll with the dog sticking out the top
I hope I didn't lose anyone with the fruit sauces mentioned above. It sounds strange but it is an amazing blend of flavors that just works. I had the original beef dog with the garlic-lemon sauce, mango sauce and mango mustard. My wife went more traditional with the beef dog, garlic lemon, spicy brown mustard and onions (you can skip any sauce type if you like). While the dogs themselves are fine (I like the kind with a "snap" when you bite, these were more skinless sausage types), the buns and sauces are fresh and delicious, and the whole flavor profile really works for us and I recommend everyone at least give it a try.
They've only been open 5 weeks and are still building tables. Dining is all outside right on I-Drive traffic, so ambience is not part of the allure, though they do play Hawaiian music. Finally it is pretty cheap. The wife and I got a hula dog, chips and soda each for $14 total. Not bad and enough for a meal. They are hoping to get a beer and wine license soon as the Brits on that part of I Drive like a beer with everything they eat or they skip it.
Finally, this is an independent restaurant in a sea of chains in the tourist area, plus it offers something unique to the region, so if you have a chance go check it out to see if the flavors work for you. Just understand it is a casual walk-up outdoor dining place, and be ready to open your mind to some different flavor combos - I think you'll like it quite a bit.
