Myself and another former Houston resident were discussing some of our favorite restaurants when we lived there. We both left Houston in the late 80's. One of our favorite places was a Mexican restaurant on Westheimer, outside of the loop. I believe it was west of Chimney Rock. It had been there for many years and was one of those places that families went for a few generations. I remember they had a wonderful grilled chicken dish that was a favorite of mine. Any ideas what the name might be? We are both tearing our hair out trying to remember this place! It was a stand alone restaurant, not in a shopping center. Sundays were very crowded there, I do remember that.
Also, there was bar in a somewhat scary area of town where the sexy female servers used to wear holsters with shot glasses in them. They made a drink called a Mexican flag with 3 colors of liquors and lit it on fire while making some sort of screeching yell. It was a really fun place to bring out of town visitors who got a big kick out of it. Anyone remember the name of that place?
I do remember how many very good restaurants there were in Houston. Excellent seafood, Vietnamese, BBQ, Mexican, Chinese. (but very seriously lacking in anything remotely resembling decent Italian food). I think I ate out at least 4 times a week when I Iived there. We miss some of the wonderful food so easy to find in Houston, specifically the Mexican and the BBQ.
I'm sure the restaurant scene has changed in 20 years, but I do know that the Mexican restaurant I speak of was open as of 10 years ago. Any ideas of the name of the place I speak of? Thanks!
