anyone driving between york and kennebunk on rte 1 would be well-served to look, and don't blink, you'll miss it, a weatherbeaten bldg on the east side of the road. only sign was part of a beverage campaign years ago, and it also reads "FLO'S STEAM DOGS." you'll be sure to see it by the line outside the screen door which is the same vintage as the sign. she has a system, so get a feel for the ordering while waiting in line. she makes her own relish; it's a bit spicy and it is always!! ordered as "relish and mayo." she will lecture you on that subject if you do not ask for it (mayo); if you do, she will consider you a faithful customer. flo's calculations always come out to the 25cent balance; do not inquire about the niceties of accurate calculation of sales tax. she loves exact change, and i get the warmest smile when i pay in all quarters ( i usually take a roll or two with me.)

now that i know who her supplier is, i stop in wells at the big supermarket, load up the dogs in the cooler, take them home and let them simmer. somehow they are not the same.
