Hot Cross Bun Roundup!

sadie | Apr 3, 2007 01:04 PM

Hi there!

I thought I'd share with you my findings in time for Easter! This was NOT an organized tasting, so I'd be delighted to hear of any high spots I missed.

I should say that I like a traditional (except for upset favorite!) hcb, with soft texture and plenty of dried fruit. Several high-end buns (see Amy's, Eli's) had the toothsome texture of a country roll -- all very well in its place, but NOT my idea of a hot cross bun!

Best:
Bouchon Bakery, Time Warner Center
(More like a fruit-rich brioche, with an unorthodox cardamom icing! I'm a purist, but there was no arguing with this bun.)

Recommended:
-William Greenberg Bakery
-Two Little Red Hens
-Rocco Pasticceria (Extra points for value - $.75)

Recommended with Reservations:
-Orwashers Bakery
-Dean and Deluca
-Entemann's (they're not bad in a pinch!)

Not Recommended:
-Zaro's Bread Basket
-Amy's Bread
-Veniero's Bakery
-E.A.T./Eli's
