I bought the $300 Behmor 1600 drum roaster on the recommendation of someone who has one, but before I used it I read that it was not good for dark roasts. Going more than ten seconds into second crack voids the warranty and reportedly can start a fire.
So I exchanged it for the $170 Fresh Roast 500. It puts out too much smoke to use indoors, unless maybe you have a range hood that's considerably better than mine. It can roast only 1/4 pound of beans in a batch.
The Behmor has a smoke reduction system that reportedly works pretty well, and it can also roast up to a pound.
