Holes in the Wall

Went looking for a Russian lunch yesterday at the restaurant (NY Cafe) in the Trader Joes shopping Plaza on SM Blvd near La Brea. The usual snappy waiter with the Soviet Block attitude was in attendance; door was open and the lunch menu posted. However, he said they were not serving lunch today! We said, well you have a lunch menu posted and the door is open and he replied - we are not....... OK we bowed and went off to the next choice, the Bombay Grill a few doors down. Very very short on ambiance but had an A rating so we risked it. Wonderful food -had the South Indian (Madras) specialities - the Uttapan, a thick Indian crepe made with lentil flour, onions, chilies and cumin seeds with a daal dip, it was GOOD. Also had fresh made vegetable samosas just crackling with flavor, also the Chicken Tikka Saag, which is Chicken Tikka cooked in spinach and cream sauce (dark meat which I just love, they don't use white meat) - this was scrumptuous. Big big heap of rice plus Lamb Korma which I didn't like as much although my two companions did. Large mango lassi for $1.25 - we are not talking big bucks here. Delightful service from Juaney (Waaney) who is from Madras. A real Hound stop.
