At the risk of turning this into a Studio Kitchen-like lovefest on this board, I want to register my enthusiastic vote of approval with The Hickory Grill on Route 309 about 5 miles south of Tamaqua. My wife and I went there Saturday afternoon and it was fabulous. David and Joan Oliver are wonderful people who treat their barbecue as the craft that it should be.
I called on Friday evening to request David to hold a rack of ribs for us. This proved to be wise as we bought the last rack. The pork spare ribs were so tender, they were falling off the bone. The taste was smoky and heavenly. David encouraged us to load up on his homemade sauce that was both sweet and vinegary.
The best part was the price. We ordered a half rack or ribs, a quarter chicken, a can of soda and a bottle of water. All of this cost only $10. As we were feasting away on one of two picnic benches next to the truck, David brought out about a quarter pound of roast pork and a quarter pound of roast beef slathered with sauce. As if that wasn't enough, as we were leaving, he gave us a quarter pound of pulled pork and a quarter pound of pulled beef that we happily made into 4 nice sandwiches and then some for dinner. David refused to charge us.
It's far to go, but it's great chow.
