Gotta question for you...or anyone else, for that matter. I had lunch at Mandina's last week and, on a long-neglected whim, had a salad after my turtle soup. What I got was an "Italian salad" but what I wanted was a "Wop Salad." Kenny, who has known me since before I was shaving, anticipated my gripe and said "Turtle soup and a wop salad...sounds familiar."
So, when did we lose the "Wop Salad" to (I assume) PC silliness? This is one of those things that must happened so gradually that I, for one, did not notice it till now. Does anyone still have it listed as such anymore? Did anyone ever really care? I remember Richard Collins writing a screed back in 1975 or 1976 about how the name was affectionate and not an insult.
Makes me wonder about some other names. I suppose Antoine's may have to re-name their signature dish "Oysters Gates" And is it fair that we have a Godchaux salad anymore?
I mentioned the foregoing to a fellow Tulane alumnus who is half Cajun and Half Italian...he was equally dismayed.
