Catching up on my East Bay Express reading and caught this recent informative review about Marylou's, a Filipino restaurant. Actually, I learned that those Filipino steam table restaurants are called Turo-turos.
Also learned that Marylou's last name is Murphy. Who'd guess. There is also a nice description of the impact of different cultures on Filipino cuisines.
Also learned the name of that relish in mason jars is called achara.
Kaufman does a nice job capturing Art's personality. I have yet to try the dinuguan but it wasn't because of the bagoong or richness of the dish, but the main ingrediant. However, if I ever do get brave enough to give it a try, it will be at Marylou's because I agreee it is one of the best turo-turo's in the East Bay and made me a fan of Filipino food ... well, at least Marylou's Filipino food.
It's a nice place to grab a bite if you are in the Hercules area and the desserts are better than what you would get at Goldilock's. It's also a good place for halo-halo.
