Helpful wine stores w/o snobs?

Stanley Stephan | Aug 13, 2002 12:42 AM

I am as annoyed as I sound. I wanted a simple little bottle of wine to go with fresh mozzarella and tomatoes and what I get in SF wine shops is ATTITUDE.

I never have this problem in Berkeley, but I can't always get over there.

Either the staff is clueless or don't want to give you the time of day unless you are some sort of wine expert.

Armed with some suggestions from Chowhound, I did a cut and past, printed the list and went to a few wine shops. This seems reasaonble.

First the good. K & L on Harrison was the only shop I visited that seemed to have an excellent selection, savy staff and, as a bonus, good prices.

I DON'T appreciate being sneered at (California Wine Merchant). YES none of the wines on my list were from California. NO I did not know the reason for the name of the store was they ONLY sold California wines. I mean, it could be interpreted as a wine merchant LOCATED in California. I was told in a totally empty shop, with a lack of enthusism, that they COULD recommend a CALIFORNIA wine to go with the dish. It was said in a tone that gave me the impression they didn't want to bother. So not wanting to bother them any further, I left.

I have had so many bad experiences at Vino on California, I don't even try there anyore.

The worst is Hennesey's on Brannon. I gave them one more try since they were in my neighborhood and again another bad experience.

So, other than K & L is there another decent wine shop in the city with a helpful staff?
