We were in Astoria last night, which as good an excuse for Greek as any. We had dined at Philoxenia back in July, were blown away and we were looking forward to another visit. The atmosphere and service were great but the chow was the star. Imagine our horror (and guilt for not having been back) when we pulled up in front of Philoxenia to find it closed - and not just for the day.
To add insult to injury, still hungry we decided to head across the street to Telly's Tavern. Big mistake. As wonderful as Philoxenia was, Telly's was horrible. The food was overseasoned, as though they were trying to hide something, the swordfish was dry and the whole experience just seemed off. If I were to struggle to find a bright spot, the tzatziki was good and the can of Coke I had was magnificent. Yet, the place was filling up and doing what seemed like good business - unlike our dearly departed Philoxenia.
Does anybody know what happened? Philoxenia was getting great write-ups and it seemed like they'd make it. Any plans for them to re-open somewhere else? And while we're at it, any great recommendations for Greek in Astoria?
