Happy Buffet in Milpitas (Grand Opening)

Bung | Dec 8, 2005 03:56 PM

I stumbled into the grand opening of Happy Buffet in Milpitas for lunch today. It was pretty good!

The emphasis is on Chinese food, but they also have a sushi bar and a 'Hawaiian barbeque' featuring teriyaki grilled beef, chicken and short ribs.

The decor is nice and new, it is bright and well lit and the steam table islands are very nicely decorated making it seem like you are dipping into a stew pot instead of an aluminum tray. Most of the food I had was hot and surprisingly good (in fairness to my other buffet review, I did arrive right around noon this time).

One of the real surprises was fish balls in chicken broth. The fish balls were soft and pillowy with a delicious center of savory fish. There was plenty of steamed and roasted meats, a Chinese hot dishes area, a stews area, and a couple of kinds of whole fish. The sushi was long on rice, but carefully prepared and fresh tasting. The teriyaki chicken was great, the beef a little less so.

The Chinese wok dishes I had were typical steam table fare, the stews considerably better. There were also cold shrimp and there was a large dessert/fruit/salad area. There were a number of challenging items I did not have room for, but I managed to try the soy pigs ear strips which were good.

Service was cheerful and omnipresent. My huge lunch came to 8.65 not including tip.

Location Calaveras at 880 across from the Arco station.
